maximizing opponents calls

I always have issue with how much to bet when i have a monster. Has anyone read anything or has their own input into this? I believe I am generally losing equity on my wins, mostly on the river.

HI crdcntr, this is a very good question. The first thing you need to consider when deciding what to bet is what kind of player your opponent is. If they are very aggressive then you can try trapping them by checking and let them do the betting for you, a very aggressive player will rarely let you check twice to them without coming out betting at a pot. If on the other hand your opponent is weaker then you may have to bet all the way down , say about half the pot and hope that they will just keep calling you.
A good trick that you can use when you flop the nuts is to bet it out on the flop and if you are lucky enough to get a call then now check the turn. This makes it look like you were bluffing the flop and will encourage your opponent to come out betting themselves as they feel they can now take the pot down. As most players check the flop when have the nuts and then bet the turn, by switching this around you disgiuse your hand very well and will often get paid off better.
Another thing to consider is what your table image is at the time. If you have been playing very aggressively and betting at most pots that you are in, don't suddenly start checking when you have the nuts as this can often raise alarm bells in your opponents mind and make them suspect a trap. If on the other hand your image is tighter you can trap check as people will often think they can now buy the pot off you by betting themselves.
When it comes to how much to bet a very important thing to consider is your oppnents chipstack and use this as a guide as to what to bet. Most players will not want to put in much more than about 25% of their stack on a mediocre hand so use this to decide the actual amount that you bet but always making sure that it is not more than about 3/4 of the pot as you want them to think that thay are still getting some "value" on their call. ON the river unless you have very little left don't go all in. By keeping some of your chips back it makes your opponent think that you are afraid to go all in as you are weak and may encourage them to call. But also try not to set them all in as they will also not want to put their whole stack on the line without a very strong hand.
I hope this has been of some help.

Good luck at the tables!
