Choosing the Correct Game for You.

games imageNo limit holdem tournaments are undoubtedly the way in which most people play their poker and for good reason.

It is one of the most exciting and complex forms of poker that exists. But it is not the only one.

Before the massive boom in poker that we have witnessed over recent years a wider variety of games were played and many of the "old school" players, both pros and amateurs alike are calling for a return to variety, it is after all, the spice of life!

Just within holdem itself you have subdivisions of tournaments, cash games and sit and go's and the betting can be no limit, limit or even pot limit. But there are also many other games and each one requires a different kind of skill. And recognising and playing to your strengths in whatever you do, is key to success.

Try playing different games to those that you usually play and you may find that your success rate changes.

Clearly, if you are an experienced player of say, no limit holdem tournaments you won't suddenly sit in a limit omaha cash game and find that you are the greatest player at the table, but with time and effort you may find that another style of poker actually suits you're unique playing style and ability better.

And this doesn't necessarily have to be a blind choice. As a general rule if your play style is tighter and more conservative, you may well find that cash games suit you better.

They are more about patience and less about gambling than tournaments and therefore tend to suit players who are more patient. And it doesn't have to be no limit. Limit play, especially limit cash play, is much more about playing flops, so if this is one of your strengths perhaps this is the game for you.

Playing a different game can also be about avoiding your weaknesses.

For example if you struggle in no limit to decide what to bet and think that you may sometimes under or over bet, try limit as when the decision of what to bet is made for you, you may actually find that your poker improves, allowing you to concentrate on other things and avoiding slaughtering your whole stack with one over-bet too far!!
