Congressman Looks to Revoke UIGEA

15 Mar, 2009

capitolCongressman Barney Frank (D-MA) has proposed a bill to revoke the Unlawful Internet Gaming Enforcement Act (UIGEA).

A spokesperson for Frank said that “the bill introduction should happen [within] the next month”

The UIGEA was passed back in 2006 preventing banks and financial institutions from transferring funds from gamblers to internet casinos and vice versa.

Many in the poker community have spoken out claiming that UIGEA is an infringement on civil rights. Frank also puts forward the UIGEA has damaged trade, specifically with the EU, with several European gaming sites forced to leave the US including PartyGaming.

Frank has previously introduced the Internet Gambling Regulation and Enforcement Act of 2007, however this never made it to a vote.
